CRYSTALIZED Krystal

f(x)’s Krystal, who has just now turned twenty years old, glowed with a girlish beauty. As much as designer Lee Myung-shin’s dress, which she picked as judge on On Style’s Project All Star. Within the picture, she has on yet another face that is neither an idol nor a girl who has just turned twenty.

 

"Rather than showy styling, I actually think that it’s better to dress down one. Relaxing the strength. Like instead of wearing earrings, a bracelet, a hat, and a scarf, wear just one as an accent. I think that looks the coolest and most stylish."

Girl group f(x)’s Krystal became a judge on On Style’s Project Runway Korea All Star (herein referred to as Project All Star). Five designers, consisting of Lee Myung-shin, Yoon Sae-na, Jung Mi-young, Hwang Jae-geun, and Im Jae-yoon, created feather dresses for her and she herself judged them. For her final selection, Krystal picked designer Lee Myung-shin’s mini dress with its impressive colorful feathers and corset details. Although she usually doesn’t enjoy showy styles, she wanted to become a bit more daring through the photo shoot and it matched her well. Krystal, wearing designer Lee Myung-shin’s feather dress and standing in front of the camera, was not the same girl we have seen up until now. There was yet another face there, one which was not that of an idol or a girl who has just turned twenty years old. And so, it can be said like this. This meeting, which must have been a type of challenge for both Project All Star and her, was quite successful.

You shot a pictorial wearing the winning piece of the ninth episode of Project All Star today. Is the photo shoot to your liking?
I was worried slightly because it’s my first attempt at this concept. I tried to express looking a bit mysterious as well as give off a strong feel to the maximum, but…. I’m not sure how many points I can give myself. (laughter) And when I saw the dress on the runway the length seemed just right, maybe because the model was tall, but it was slightly too long when I wore it. I thought, “Bah, a model really is a model.”

What is the reason you chose designer Lee Myung-shin’s piece out of the five dresses?
When I imagined shooting a pictorial, I thought that it would come out looking the coolest and prettiest. Because to start with, it mixes in several colors. And out of that, the bust and neck areas that were decorated with yellow feathers were to my liking. I liked those minor details. And in addition, this outfit isn’t an absolutely feminine style. I thought that there was a strength to it somewhere, and so received the feeling that she made it to match me well.

Which piece was most to your liking aside from designer Lee Myung-shin’s?
The long green dress designer Lee Jae-yoon made for me. I kept deliberating over which of the two pieces to choose.

It must have been the first time you judged clothes someone designed, it must not have been easy.
When I was judging I really couldn’t bring myself to speak. Come on, what could I really be the judge of. (laughter) I didn’t think that it was good etiquette to make criticisms of clothes which the designers lost sleep over and worked hard to make.

It’s extremely showy, as it’s made of feathers. You don’t seem like you would enjoy wearing this type of style in your everyday life.
I tend not to wear clothes with showy colors. It’s okay to be showy on stage, but in my everyday life I like everything to be simple. I like simplicity so much that even my room doesn’t contain much furniture.

When choosing clothes you must not adhere strictly to the trends then.
I don’t at all. Because I choose items of basic designs. Of course, I do like clothes but I don’t think I’m a fashion person. If I wear it and it suits me, then ding! (laughter) I think that if I dress to my liking, then it can look pretty to others as well.

Isn’t appearing to dress with sense even without deliberate styling a difficult thing in itself?
Rather than showy styling, I actually think that it’s better to dress down one. Relaxing the strength. Like instead of wearing earrings, a bracelet, a hat, and a scarf, wear just one as an accent. I think that looks the coolest and most stylish.

So then you must want to make more daring attempts in photo shoots or f(x) performances.
Since I typically don’t do bling bling styles in everyday life, I feel happy when I put drape on an item like that on stage or during a photo shoot. A lot of people think that I enjoy wearing showy clothes in my everyday life. Like neon colored items. (laughter) But in reality I’m not like that.

By any chance is there a style you want to attempt for f(x)’s concept?
It’s hard to pick one in particular since there are so many styles I want to try; rather, the styles that would be difficult for me to attempt are the ones that are clear-cut. Between the members we always say, “Hey, it would probably be cringe worthy if we wore one-piece dresses and heels and did an innocent concept, right? Let’s not.” It must be because none of us particularly like dressy or girlish styles. It’s okay for different shoots, but we don’t want to release an album with that concept. Since we haven’t been a group that only dances girlish dances, when new choreography is being created and it has that type of part we all worry, “Isn’t this too girlish?”

Everyone clearly understands f(x)’s identity.
I like taking on new challenges, but I don’t want to lose f(x)’s own unique color. Because we dance a lot of complicated and strong choreography, that becomes a differentiating aspect between us and other teams and I don’t want to lose that.

It must have felt like f(x)’s style was being acknowledged when you won the Best Dance & Electronic Song award at the 2013 Korea Music Awards.
At first there were a lot of opinions that our color was too difficult to understand. But because we mixed in general public appeal little by little while insisting on our style, it now has become accepted. They’re acknowledging, “Ah, so this is what f(x) is.” Rather than coming out with new music and styles and then completely changing everything because it wasn’t a success, I think it’s important to deliberate over how it can receive love while being maintained.

How did you feel when you received an invitation as the first Korean idol group to SXSW, which was held in the US? It definitely must have been different from the performances you’ve done up until then.
SXSW took place at late night/early morning at a club. People were standing right in front of the stage so we could really feel the fervor. They sang along to the music and danced and cheered a lot. Thanks to that we had fun performing even as we were dripping with sweat. With zest, really zestfully! (laughter) It really was a lot of fun. I thought, “So this is why people go to clubs.” If we have the opportunity I want to go again next year.

When the reactions are so good, don’t adlibs just come out on their own accord?
 Not me. I don’t really like it when things that are established go off course, so I haven’t adlibbed once from debut until now. And since our team dances as a group there isn’t much room to do an adlib. But lately they’ve often been putting in adlibs like “Yeah~ say ho~ wow!” (laughter) Since Amber unnie raps it’s natural when she does those things, but I think it would be awkward if I did it.

Did you watch a lot of the performances of the bands from other countries?
No. We greeted and exchanged hellos with the band sunbaenims who went with us from Korea, but didn’t see the other teams at all. As soon as our performance ended we had to go to LA to shoot for Funny or Die. Did you happen to watch that? Ah, I was watching then turned it off. It was too embarrassing. (laughter)

You must have felt bashful even though you have acting experience from High Kick! The Revenge of the Short Legged.
Events that arise in sitcoms are situations that can always happen in reality. But the subject we acted out for Funny or Die was a complete conte. There’s no possibility of Anna Kendrick joining f(x), and we wouldn’t tease someone for not being able to speak Korean. But acting while keeping in mind that it was all just fake was actually helpful in adapting.

Among the members, who do you think acted the most naturally and cleverly?
Me! (laughter) No, rather than having done well, Amber unnie and I had a lot of lines because we can converse in English. But teasing Anna Kendrick or ordering her around all became my load. Well, I coolly did it thinking, “This time I’m the villain.”

I heard that you practiced the choreography for your new album with famous choreographer Kevin Maher in LA.
I worried a lot because it was our first time working with Kevin Maher. I wondered what we would do if the choreography was hard and difficult or if it didn’t match us well. But that was all for nothing. We had fun working, like we were receiving dance lessons. We ended up working harder because it was a method we were newly learning.

Truthfully, when you prepare a new album you have to familiarize yourself with certain aspects that are different from what you’ve done up until that point. You must not feel much fear or burden about that.
It’s the most fun when we’re preparing a new album. I like the process of filming a music video with a new concept and recording new songs. And on top of that, when we shoot for the album jacket the photographer comes and takes photos while we just do anything. He takes photos even when we’re not preparing. When we’re free and uninhibited, so to speak? I must get easily tired of things. (laughter) Anyway, because f(x) is a team that can try this or that and everything, promoting is more fun.

But from debut until now, it doesn’t seem like your style has changed much. Is there a style you want to try out?
I want to try having short hair, try cutting bangs, and I’m curious about a shaved head as well. I’ve thought about, “How would I look without hair?” (laughter) Since I’ve always maintained my hair at this length there are times when I get tired of long straight hair. But the people in my vicinity tell me, “Don’t get bangs and don’t cut your hair short. Just dye it.” They must think that long hair suits me best.

You debuted when you were a middle school student, and now you’ve become an adult. Is there anything that’s changed during that time?
I really can’t tell. Truthfully, I liked being in my teens so much that I really didn’t want to enter my twenties… (laughter) Even though the first number of my age has become a two there isn’t anything that’s actually changed. But the people around me keep asking how it feels to have turned twenty. I always answer, “It doesn’t feel much different.” I don’t have anything to say. Since other than getting my driver’s license, there wasn’t anything I particularly wanted to do once I turned twenty.

There are times when you feel the transformation when you see the behavior of those around you change, rather than your own changes.
That’s right. Not too long ago I went to eat at an Italian restaurant with (Jessica) unnie. Unnie said she wanted a glass of wine and ordered, but then she asked me too. At that point I thought, “I really have become an adult. They’re giving me a wineglass.”

You were treated as a twenty year old adult.
By international age I’m still eighteen! (laughter)

‘Jung Soojung,I, Choi Jinri love you with all my heart.:P ’ Krystal read the short note that she found in her desk.She smiled before she look around to find the one that wrote the note. Her smile getting wider when she saw a tall girl under a shady tree outside her classroom.That girl is waving at her and giving her signal for her to go there.

“Good morning,Ssul.” Krystal greets Sulli while giving her a 90o bow.

“Good morning Soojung.Hey,stop being too formal with me. I don’t like that.” Sulli answered while faking a mad face.

“I’m sorry Ssul.I’m not used with it yet.” Krystal’s face turn saddened. She know that Sulli don’t like her to be too formal when she’s with Sulli but, her respects make her difficult to change.Sulli is a daughter of one of the minister in South Korea and because of that, she couldn’t stop herself from gives all of her respects to Sulli.

“Oh.It’s okay.I’m just kidding..hehe.Come breakfast together.I didn’t breakfast yet.” Sulli smiled before putting her hand on Krystal shoulders.Krystal smiled back at her. Sulli take out two sandwiches and hand one of it to Krystal.Krystal take it and thanked Sulli.

“Princess, are you good in playing puzzles?” Sulli suddenly asked breaking the silence between them.
“Puzzle? Not really,why?” The sudden random question make Krystal frowned.

“Nothing,I’m just curious. Even though it’s still morning, you’ve already completed my day.” Sulli calmly replied while looking at her side, watching the cute angel with a name that sounds the same from forward or backward, Jung Soojung.

There was a silent moment for a second before Krystal caught the meaning of Sulli’s words.
“O My God,Ssul..” Krystal blushed.

“Look,you’re blushing,princess.So cute.I should save this forever.” Sulli quickly take out her camera.She always bring that camera everywhere and everytime.

Krystal playfully covered her face,trying to stop Sulli from taking her photo.

“Hehe..finally I got it..Should keep this safe.” Sulli laughed while waving her camera. She get up and try to run away from Krystal.

“Ssul!!! How could you??? Give it back to me.” Krystal chasing Sulli around the tree while trying to make a serious face,eventhough,she’s smiling secretly.

She was too focused on getting the  camera back from the taller girl that she didn’t notice a big root in front of her. She carelessly stepped on it and causing her to lose her balance.She accidentally grabbed Sulli’s uniform and…..

BUK!

“Ouch!!!” A scream could be heard under the tree. There,were lying two girls with the taller one on top of the shorter one. Sulli fell on top of Krystal and their faces are inches only from each other. Krystal opened her eyes and saw two pairs of beautiful eyes staring at her.She forgot the pains that she got earlier as she was mesmerized by the calmness and lovely eyes of Sulli.
“Princess,there is something in your eyes.” Sulli finally spoke.

“I do?” Krystal asked, her voices is almost inaudible.Sulli is still on top of her and their closeness mercilessly messing with her heartbeat.Luckily nobody is there at the moment.If not, their secret relationship will be surfaced everywhere.

“Yeah.I could see sparkles..Are you enjoying loving me,princess?” Sulli cheekily answered before trying to get off of Krystal.

“Pfft…Wait.” Krystal holding Sulli’s tightly,didn’t want to let her go.She rolled herself to make her on top of Sulli.

“Why?” Sulli was surprised by the sudden act.

“I’m listening to my favourite song,right now.” Krystal placed her head closed to Sulli’s chest.

“Pardon?”

“I’m listening to my favourite song right now,Ssul.Your heartbeat.” Krystal answered while looking up to lock her eyes with Sulli’s.

Sulli grinned at Krystal’s words while circling her hands around Krystal’s slim waist.That is one of Krystal’s charms. Krystal is famous with her coldness and her I’m-not-interested-with-anything attitude but with Sulli,she can be all girlish and lovely. Sulli also is the only people that is not Krystal’s family that Krystal’s showed her cuteness.

“You are so cute.I really couldn’t take you off from my mind.I really love you.” Sulli whispering to Krystal’s ears while playing with Krystal’s hairs.

“Is that meant,if one day,something happened to me and I become hideous,you will no longer love me? Is it?” Krystal get off from Sulli.

“Of course I’m not.I didn’t love you because of your cuteness only.I love you because you’re Krystal and you’re my Jung Soojung.Your cuteness is just a bonus to me,Soojung.” Sulli pinched Krystal’s nose playfully. She might looks playful but,she’s serious with her words.Her love for Krystal is greater than the love that Romeo has to his Juliet and even if Sulli wants to cheat,she can’t. To her,Krystal already filled every parts of her heart and she couldn’t love anyone else after Krystal.

“Thank you Ssul.I know I can trust you.” Krystal placed her hands on Sulli’s hand and gave her gentle squeeze.

“Soojung ah…You didn’t answer by question yet.Are you enjoy loving me?” Sulli still couldn’t get over that question.

“Before I answered you,I want to say this.I love you for 999 years,  364 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds….” Krystal spoke.

“Soojung ah…”. Sulli’s eyes becomes watery.

“Hush..I didn’t finish yet.” Krystal placed her pointer finger on Sulli’s luscious pink lips,preventing her from continuing anything that she want to say.

“I just need you to love me for 1 second.When you do,our thousand-year-love will be complete.” Krystal finished her words with a sincere smile.

Sulli couldn’t be more touched that what she felt right now. She hug Krystal tightly and trying hard to not cry. Krystal’s words make her feel loved,something that she didn’t feel for a long time.

“I never know you have this side of you,Soojung.Where do you learnt this from? I thought someone cold will never be this romantic.And,not forget to say,Jung is well known with their coldness.” Sulli asked while playing with Krystal long black hairs.

“Don’t judge a ‘Jung’ by their coldness.Of course I learnt it from my sister,the famous sleepyhead Ice Princess.” Krystal take another sandwich that Sulli bought and feed it to Sulli.Sulli smiled before open her mouth and eat that sandwich. Eating breakfast together is one of their routines after they became a couple.

“I love this side of you.Don’t show it to the others.I want to be the only one that can have a look at this lovely side of yours.” Sulli said while munching the sandwich.

“Of course I don’t,Choi Jinri.No need to be jealous.” Krystal lovingly replied. She give a bottle of milk to Sulli. She enjoyed pampering her lover.Sulli’s happiness is her happiness as well.And of course, Sulli also love it.

“My father’s wealth that worth million dollars never make me happy like this.I guess I found the real happiness that my heart was craving for.” Sulli said after she finished her milk.

Krystal throws her glance to the one beside her,waiting for the other girl to finish her words.

“And the happiness is you,Jung Soojung.I love you.” She take Krystal’s hand and put it near to her chest.

“Whose girlfriend is this? So cheesy even it is still early in the morning?” Krystal asked,pretending to
ignore Sulli’s romantic and short confession.

Sulli smirked. She know,she will get that kind of response from the cold younger girl and she knew it well,Krystal pretend to ignore her to hide her blushed face.

She give a peck on the younger girl lips before getting up.

“You.” Sulli answered with a cute loud laugh.

Krystal smiled while touching her lips.

“Come.We already late for the class.” Sulli helped Krystal to get up. She give another peck on her girlfriend’s lips before both of them heading to the class. A day will be brighter and happier for this two lovebirds.

Inside the studio where the chill of a harsh winter flows, it is as though a protective shield of spring’s vitality has formed only around the vicinity of three people. Could biological siblings even be this affectionate. They are f(x)’s Sulli and Krystal, front cover stars of the 94 unit and counted as the “flower beauty” idol representatives, and SHINee’s Minho. The curiosity of “Are they close in real life?” was solved as soon as he arrived at the filming location. “Over there?” He asks about the girls’ makeup room, then strides over and opens the door without hesitation. A happy and welcoming voice replies to Minho’s greeting of “hi” in five octaves. Whenever there was a chance they conversed together and broke out in bright smiles just at making eye contact, even while the filming was taking place. At the reporter’s words of “It would be nice if you could look closer” during the filming of the cover shot, they put their heads together and linked arms together. When Minho’s and Sulli’s hands landed on top of one another’s, a playful remark of “Ah, our hands touched!” was made towards Sulli. Befitting of prominent best friends, twenty-year-old same-age friends Sulli and Krystal appeared to well with a happy virus by just being next to one another. The bright and fresh youth that puts those in their vicinity who are gazing upon them in a good mood, the sweet and free times they share.

 

Krystal:
This is Vic umma's introduction to Hong Kong and Macao! I've been really, really waiting for it!
These are places we go to often, but I had no idea that there were so many interesting places not a lot of people knew about.
I wish that one time, all the f(x) members would be able to go for a vacation according to the route Vic umma took.

Sulli:
Looking back at Hong Kong and Macao thoroughly like this is like having pictures sent out from her handphone in real-time!
As the book unfolds, I begin to get a picture of how fun and exciting this trip was for Vic umma.
I didn't know that before, as I merely went to the places I had to go to...
In the future, I'll browse all the places that showed up in this book. One by one.

Amber, “I Passed the SM Audition by Singing, Not Rapping” (Interview ②)

 

“My dream was to be a scientist. Or an environmentalist. Becoming a singer felt like a far away dream. A dream that was out of my reach.”

 

f(x)’s Amber, whose dream was to become a scientist and who strolled around the streets of LA in pajamas and enjoyed playing basketball with friends, was a boyish girl like her current image. “I really liked music. I was in a band at church. My position was drums, guitar, vocals, and so on. I’ve done street performances too. I liked rock. My friends liked hip-hop so I listened to it a lot too.”

 

Amber, who wasn’t nitpicky over music, approached the dream that looked far away through SM Entertainment’s global auditions in 2007. Though as a rapper I think she is the best among current SM Entertainment’s female singers as her rap abilities are fresh and excellent, unexpectedly it was her singing ability that was the reason she passed at the time.  “I passed SM’s global auditions by singing. Rap is something I naturally came to do. I liked it when I was young. Though not of a perfect hip-hop rap style, I liked Linkin Park and followed along to Eminem a lot too.”

 

If you listen to the song “Beautiful Stranger” from f(x)’s second mini album Electric Shock, which is reminiscent of a dark image, Amber’s heavy rap which penetrates beneath Krystal and Luna’s high vocals leaves an impression. Amber also said that she likes this song, and added “Gangsta Boy” and “Ice Cream” as f(x) songs she likes.

 

Then she defined f(x)’s music as “A genre you can’t define.” “Even a familiar melody will change if you put our voices over it. We can sing diverse songs because the voices of vocals Victoria unnie, Luna, Krystal, and Sulli are so different from one another’s. An already existing song becomes an entirely different one if we sing it together.”

 

I felt that with f(x)’s absence of eleven out of twelve months, a one-month promotional cycle is too short. Perhaps it is because nowadays girl groups make you dizzy with the overuse of comebacks and closing stages throughout the twelve months, but f(x)’s hiatus periods feel long and distant. When I brought up my dissatisfaction with such hiatuses, Amber spoke of f(x)’s indefinable music. “We need a year of preparation time. Because we must have fresher and more unique music for the fans and the general public to listen to, I think that preparation period is absolutely necessary.”

 

Even in the midst of preparing for a new album, Amber said that she juggles studying how to create songs and come up with lyrics. It occurred to me that a day may come when composer Amber’s song is included in f(x)’s album, and the voice of Amber, who doesn’t want to become trapped within the boundaries of being a rapper, once again sounded sincere. I want to become a person who uses her voice. Whether it’s through rapping or through singing, a person who uses her voice. I want to become a singer without an assigned title who creates a diverse voice that makes people go, ‘Oh, Amber does things like this too?’”

Amber, “Rumors of Dropping Out? f(x) is Family” (Interview ①)

 

 

It was 2010. Amber disappeared from f(x)’s stages. Soon, rumors claiming that she would drop out of f(x) began to circulate. The rumors grew fat as it fed on people’s whispers, then rumors of discord among the f(x) members were added in. Their fans, who repetitively waited while fearful of the rumors, referred to that period as the “time of endurance.”

 

I met Amber three years later in 2013. She was tall and her face was small, and she appeared wearing a knit mixed with bold blue and orange stripes. She said “I don’t have a business card,” with a face full of playfulness when I handed her mine, then slipped her hand forward saying, “I am Amber.” Amber’s laugh was so bright and big that I couldn’t see her eyes.

 

Two years ago in 2011. In the end, there was no dropping out for Amber. Amber, who had been away from the team due to an ankle injury, returned from the US and the complete five-membered f(x) took first place on a music program ranking for the first time since their debut. Because it was a result which was forged as they overcame rumors of members dropping out and discord among the group, f(x) cried after receiving their trophy.

 

Amber likes to play pranks on the f(x) members. So when f(x) is gathered together, the area is talkative and overflows with the sound of laughter. “If someone starts to play a prank on one person, then we all start to play pranks on each other like a domino effect. We don’t know how to stay still. I play pranks frequently on Krystal and Sulli, and Victoria unnie pranks Luna the most. But it’s no joke once Luna gets into the ‘feel.’ Later on there are times when we speak frankly amongst ourselves in a mix of Korean, Chinese, and English.”

 

The members call f(x)’s oldest unnie Victoria “Vic umma.” “Vic umma” has settled the colors of the members, which are each different from one another’s, into one f(x), and Amber has cherished the dongsaengs. Amber boasted, “They’re all pretty and cute,” and came up with the nicknames “puppy” for Luna, “princess” for Krystal, and “little brother” for Sulli. The eyes of unnie Amber sparkled as she spread her boastings about her dongsaengs.

 

There is no way that five young and immature girls who gathered and spent five years together didn’t fight at all. What is important is the process of reconciliation, and Amber brought up “misunderstanding” and “understanding.” “At first there were misunderstandings between us because of differences in culture and language. However, as we’ve spent over five years together, now we members understand each other’s feelings well. If I’m sad over something, the members will come to me first to comfort me and say, ‘It’s okay.’ We have telepathy. A telepathy, so that we know even if we don’t say.”

 

When I asked her about 2010, which was when the rumors of her having dropped out were circulating, she said, “I laughed. I went, ‘But that’s not it, it’s because of an injury.’ But the rumors kept growing. But I left it alone. Because I can just show people when I return later.” I also asked her when her happiest moment was as she promoted as f(x).

 

“When the members all rehearse together before a comeback, that’s when I’m happiest. Before, when we were trainees preparing for debut, our members didn’t rest and continued to practice singing and choreography. But now when we rehearse choreography together before a comeback, even when it’s hard we become happy when we think back on the memories of those times.”

 

Amber’s voice was excited all throughout the interview. It appears that her Korean, which had been clumsy, is now passable enough for her to express most of her thoughts nimbly. Nevertheless she mumbled a bit, as though a few words were still difficult, but there was one thing she said with clear pronunciation and without a moment’s hesitation to select a word or organize her thoughts. When I said that the members all seemed to be close, this was Amber’s response. “f(x) is family.”
